Commencing operations in 1998 and now an industry leader in design and production of sustainable, innovative, premium quality fabrics, ABMT Textiles is a one of Meydan Group’s flagship assets. The fabrics are sourced locally and internationally by high end fashion houses, sportswear labels and large organisations such as the military who require robust, durable fabrics.
Held in high regard internationally for their gorgeous designs and their products’ knit and dye quality, ABMT specialises in the manufacture of knitted fabrics.
ABMT Textiles has operations in Melbourne, Australia and Shanghai, China. Together, these two operations provide the capability to continue ongoing industry leading research through the colour testing and development laboratory.
Innovation and quality distinguish ABMT’s operations, together with the overall business management, which has maintained a diligent focus on continuous improvement and quality. This approach allows ABMT to continue meeting market demand for quality certified manufacturing processes and products.
Meydan Group’s founder, Moshe’s entrepreneurial activities began in the Australian textile industry in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. This interest continues today through his particular passion for textiles.
When ABMT became available in 2002 (when ABMT was a major supplier to the founder’s then apparel manufacturing businesses), he purchased the business with minor partners, including Steve Tsonidis, then Operations Manager and now the General Manager of ABMT.
While the greater textile manufacturing industry in Australia consolidated during the 2000’s, ABMT diversified into specialty markets.
Throughout the early years of Meydan Group ownership, ABMT concentrated on what some had deemed “hype” products, such as stretch athletic fabrics and organic cotton.
As a result of this foresight, ABMT emerged as one of the major suppliers into Adidas Australia and Target, with mid-high end fashion retailers also quickly taking advantage of a local and more flexible supply chain.
During this period, ABMT also invested in the latest advancements in low energy, low water and highly automated fabric processing equipment, while also installing a highly advanced water treatment and recycling plant.
This helped ensure ABMT remained competitive as utility and labour costs grew, with ethical and environmental demands of consumers also a consideration. With only 35 factory floor staff, ABMT now produces in excess of 20,000 kilograms or 60,000 metres of fabric per week with the factory operating 24 hours, 5-6 days each week.
ABMT Australia has evolved to become Australasia’s premier circular knit manufacturer, supplying to well established retailers such as Kookai and Mountain Designs. The company is now a recognised global specialist in the wool circular knit industry; a niche market segment capitalising on Australia’s heritage in fine merino wool. ABMT exports to diverse brands and retailers spread across five continents and more than 15 countries.
